Spenrol vs YNAB: is there a free alternative for India?
YNAB more or less invented the modern zero-based budgeting method Spenrol is built on. But it bills $109 a year in US dollars, and its bank-sync doesn't reach Indian accounts. Here's what's different.
Spenrol makes one of the apps compared here. Claims about other apps come from their own store listings, FAQs, and public pricing. Last updated: August 2026

Quick take
Credit where it's due: YNAB is the reason "zero-based budgeting" is a phrase people search for. It turned a decades-old accounting principle into a habit millions of people practice, mostly through careful product and teaching work.
Spenrol borrows that same discipline (assign every rupee before you spend it) and rebuilds the parts around it for a market YNAB wasn't designed for: UPI payments, Indian bank accounts, and rupee pricing without a currency conversion every renewal.

When YNAB is the better choice
You want the mature methodology, taught properly.
YNAB has years of refined courses, workshops, and a large community built around teaching zero-based budgeting in depth. If you want to study the method properly, beyond using an app that implements it, YNAB's education library is hard to match.
You budget from a laptop, not just your phone.
YNAB's web app is a full experience in any desktop browser, alongside its iOS and Android apps. Spenrol is live on Android, with iOS to follow and no web app yet. If you do most of your budgeting from a laptop, YNAB covers that today and Spenrol doesn't.
You're budgeting as a household, not solo.
YNAB supports multiple people working off one shared budget, which suits couples or families managing money together. If shared household budgeting is the core requirement, this is a real advantage over a single-user app.
When Spenrol is the better choice
You don't want to pay $109/yr in USD for a method you can get free.
Spenrol is free. There's no trial and nothing billed in dollars.
Your bank is Indian, and you use UPI daily.
YNAB's bank-sync runs on Plaid, which doesn't connect to Indian banks. Spenrol never tries to link your bank. You share a UPI payment screenshot, it's read on your phone, and there's no bank connection to fail.
You want to see which spends were impulse.
Spenrol tags every spend required, optional or impulsive, which YNAB's categories don't do. That distinction is what turns "I overspent on food" into "half of that was impulse," which is the more useful thing to know.

Is YNAB available in India?
The app and website work from India, but two things get in the way: billing runs in US dollars at $109/year, and YNAB's bank-sync uses Plaid, which doesn't support Indian bank connections. So Indian users typically end up entering transactions manually anyway, while still paying the dollar subscription.
What's different between Spenrol and YNAB?
The underlying method is the same: zero-based budgeting, where every rupee (or dollar) gets assigned before the month starts. The difference is everything around it. Spenrol is free, built for UPI India, and reads payment screenshots instead of needing a bank connection that doesn't work here.
Does YNAB connect to Indian bank accounts?
No. YNAB's automatic bank-sync runs on Plaid, and Plaid doesn't support Indian banks. Manual entry is the only option for Indian users.
Is Spenrol free?
Yes. No paid tier and no ads. That covers zero-based budgeting, screenshot capture and intent tags.
Can I use Spenrol on desktop, like YNAB?
Not yet. Spenrol is live on Android now, with iOS to follow. YNAB has the edge here if you specifically want a desktop or web app alongside mobile.
Why does YNAB have a reputation for being hard to learn?
It's a deep method, and the depth is what makes the first few sessions feel like hard work. Most new users say it takes a bit of practice before the four rules click. Spenrol trades some of that depth for a simpler, faster habit: tag the spend, see the pattern.
